Frequently Asked Questions

With version 1.1.5, we have added support for HomeKit - this means you can use any smart outlet designed to work with HomeKit for controlling up to 3 fans. The Bluetooth-based SwitchBot Plug Mini is still supported, however it is only available in a Type-B (North American 3-pin, grounded) plug. If an EU/UK SwitchBot plug becomes available we will add support for those as well.

Note that to use HomeKit from a macOS app, you will need to have a home hub, which can be accomplished with either a HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV, or an iPad. Learn how on Apple's website

To use HomeKit outlets in Fan IO, set up the outlets in HomeKit and give them a descriptive name (such as "Floor Fan" or "Face Fan", etc.). Once they have been added to HomeKit you will be able to select them from the Fan IO app.

You can purchase SwitchBot Plug Mini directly from SwitchBot or from Amazon.

This typically occurs if the app has not been given permission to use Bluetooth, HomeKit, or both. You can fix this by adding the Bluetooth and HomeKit permission settings in System Preferences->Privacy and Security. For HomeKit, you need to have at least on Home configured, as well as a Hub.

Heartrate Monitors

Any Bluetooth-enabled heart rate monitor should be compatible as long it supports the standard BLE protocol such as the Wahoo TICKR, Garmin Dual, Polar H10, etc..

Body Temperature

Currently the only body temperature sensor supported is the CORE body temperature sensor, but more will be supported if/when they are available.

Ambient Temperature

At this time the SwitchBot Meter TH sensor is supported, but others should be supported soon.

Variable-speed Fans

The Wahoo Headwind is currently the only variable-speed fan on the market to support Bluetooth connectivity and control. If other compatible fans come to market, we will try to add support for those.

Smart Plugs for general fan control (on/off)

Not currently. If you are interested in an iOS/Android/Windows version - submit feedback so we can make a better informed decision on supporting other platforms.

This is by design to prevent "flapping" any configured fan on/off rapidly. The app maintains a 10 second sliding window of heart rate measurements, and uses an average of that window to control the fans.

Good question! We think the heart rate range settings are much easier to quickly change with a range slider. Conditions change from day to day, season to season, cold basement to cold basement, etc. - plus you can add and control more fans to trigger during your VO2 max intervals all in one place!
